“Design also means looking at everyday objects with a curious eye.”
Vico Magistretti
“LESS IS MORE” is what Ludwig Mies van der Rohe said: then why must a stool or a chair have four legs?
GarpeZ came forth spontaneously, with no presumption, on a wintery Sunday afternoon.
The model was completed even before we had finalised the draft plan.
The joints between each of the parts that combine to become its legs were sketched almost in play, the way you do when you are a child, finding a nice shape before thinking of its use.
It all started with a snapshot on a cell phone.
Just a few days, later we were already talking about it, having lunch with a skilled craftsperson who was intrigued by the shape of the object.
We aimed more at reaching an organic shape than at fulfilling fixed dogmas in the prototyping process, reducing the volume of the structure as much as possible and seeking perfection in detail, especially in the joints.
First, we completed the leg’s structure, then for the seat we conducted a few experiments following the rules of ergonomics and aesthetics.
